8 Designer Tips for Supersizing Your Small Space

Apartment residents and urban dwellers, you know this design dilemma well! Small rooms and compact spaces can be a challenge when trying to determine how to integrate what you need—the essentials—with what you really want—the personal design touches that elevate your style. Luckily, we have plenty of Decorist designers who love a good small space challenge. We asked them for tips that will make a huge difference in your room. Here are eight optical illusions to try at home.

1. Hang Oversize Art

When it comes to art, don’t make the mistake most people do which is to scale down their art thinking small works with small. Going big, as in an oversized canvas that takes up a good majority of the wall, can have a dramatic impact on how large your room feels. Counterintuitive? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.

2. Use Multi-tasking Furniture

Look for furniture pieces that can function in more ways than one to cut down on the total number of pieces you need. A bar cart can double as a console table. You can use it for everyday storage or for showcasing decorative objects and, of course, roll it out and stock it with libations when you are entertaining. Ottomans that open up are always great for hiding toys, linens, and media accessories, and tufted coffee tables make the perfect auxiliary seating.

3. Lighten Up Your Color Palette

Consider a lighter floor and white or pastel paint on the walls (or both) to make a small room feel breezier and roomier. Try it in a tiny guest bedroom or galley kitchen where it can create a seamless expanse that optically broadens the room.

4. Be in the Clear

Using glass and acrylic furniture keeps your sightline open throughout the room, which creates the illusion of a larger space. Not to mention, translucent pieces always looks chic, sophisticated, and polished.

5. Scale Up Your Rug

Resist the urge to downsize your rug dimensions and, instead, look for one that fills up the majority of the floor. A “wall to wall” effect will make a room look larger and more cohesive. Layering rugs is a big trend right now, but save that design touch for your larger rooms where you want to create a more intimate feel.

6. Banish Clutter

This is a bit of a no-brainer but can be tough when you’re limited on space to store things as it is. Consider wall-to-wall shelving, covered baskets and hidden catch-all’s that are good for tucking away the everyday things that tend to accumulate on tables and counters.

7. Reflect Light With Mirrors

One of the oldest tricks in the book, mirrors are brilliant for reflecting the space and light. They trick the eye into thinking that a space is bigger than it appears. Create a gallery wall of smaller framed mirrors or lean or hang an oversized mirror.

8. Install Oversize Furniture

Rather than sourcing smaller pieces to “fit” the room, select furniture with a big footprint to ground the space and allow for more breathing room. Consider which pieces you absolutely need and scale those up. You may wind up buying fewer pieces, but do you need two side tables? Probably not. This trick instantly improves the flow in a room and can make a crowded space feel airy.
