If you're moving into a studio apartment in a city with astronomical prices (hello, San Francisco and New York!) you know how important it is to have a well designed space. And even though a studio apartment is small there are definitely some tricks to make them feel larger and more functional without sacrificing comfort and style.

Keeping rental restrictions in mind, Decorist Elite designer LABLstudio recently designed a laid-back studio apartment on the Upper West Side in New York that was chock-full of small space tricks, studio apartment setup ideas, sophisticated design details and inviting vibes that proved size really doesn’t matter. Today, they will share their 5 tips to designing that perfect studio apartment.

1. Use multi-functional furniture

In small spaces, selecting pieces that can vary in function is key to maximizing the room. We love to source slim consoles that serve as display, workspace, or dining. Small coffee tables and stools work as additional seating or a drink/foot rest and also offer felxibilty for placement based upon your needs.

2. Create a statement wall

Oversized art or dramatic wallpaper helps to add interest to a smaller space and overall trick the eye into feeling that the room is as grand as the statement! We love using removable wallpaper for rental spaces, such as this one to add impact (without sacrificing your security deposit!) We received so many inquiries about the wallpaper in this space, that we partnered up with of removable papers designed to add style and impact for small spaces.

3. Floating Shelves

Open floor space is key to helping smaller spaces feel light and uncluttered. We love floating shelves as both storage and display - in this case the room didn’t allow for a nightstand, so these shelves add a place to rest your cellphone or drink when lounging in bed.

4. Look up

Unique lighting adds personality to smaller spaces. This draped cord metallic pendant adds interest to an otherwise bland hallway. By draping the cord throughout the hallway, it offers a touch of the unexpected and gives a great first (and lasting) impression.

5. Add a pop of color

A little color goes a long way - this room reads as pretty colorful, but we actually kept the base of the design neutral with gray, beige and metallics. The throw pillows and magenta juju are the game changers that add the right amount of vibrancy to the space without it feeling overwhelming.
