6 Tips to Achieving A Sophisticated Coastal Vibe
Whether you live on the coast or just dream about ocean breezes, you too can use coastal influences to create a sophisticated home using a neutral greyish-blue palette with pops of color, organic elements and a variety of textures and materials without going crazy on all those sea-themed accents.
To get this look we turned to one of our own talented A-List celebrity designers Ann Lowengart who recently designed a gorgeous home in Northern California. Today Annie gives us her 6 tips on getting that sophisticated coastal vibe. And you can learn more about her project featured in .
Select a neutral background
A neutral palette ensures spaces that you'll never get sick of and can easily be updated with a swap of accessories. For this project, I layered different shades of grey for a cool, organic feel that didn't detract from the home's panoramic views.
Layer geometric pattern
Geometric patterns are an easy way to add interest to a clean, neutral space. Working in grey tones, I selected geometric print fabrics and carpets throughout the home, giving the spaces a sense of continuity. Don't be afraid to play with accents, such as upholstering the sides and backs of armchairs in a separate fabric, for a element of surprise.
Play with pops of color in private spaces
Intimate spaces, such as bedrooms and powder rooms, are great places to explore color. Whether a bold wallpaper in a little girl's room or vibrant accent pillows, pops of color create vibrancy and cheer. Colorful accessories can also be interchanged throughout the year for seasonality.
Balance glamorous and organic accessories
Faced with balancing the husband's desire for an organic feel and the wife's passion for all things glam, I married the two sensibilities in wallcoverings, furniture and accessories. Natural touches—Trove's tree-print wallpaper, branching light fixtures, and a silver stump side table—ground the space. Glamorous materials such as lucite and silver accents give the home a signature shine.
Use lighting to make a statement
Choose sculptural light fixtures in place of statement artwork. Whether a branching chandelier bejeweled with Swarovski crystals or oversized globes, lighting can elevate any space.
Make it personal
To make a home feel truly one-of-a-kind, showcase family photography. For a fresh approach, I turned the family's Christmas photo of their children running on the beach into a wall mural with a custom wallpaper from Trove.
