A Saturday with Stefani Stein

JULY 22, 2017

One of the things our customers love most about their Decorist experience (in addition to their beautiful new room design, of course!) is the relationship they forge with their designer. Our designers take the time to get to know each of their customers—their needs, styles, budgets, what they like, dislike, etc.—which enables them to create personal room designs that are spot-on.

We think these relationships, between our customers and designers, are rather special. It's not just about the designer getting to know their customer, it's also about the customer getting to know their designer. And our designers are pretty cool, interesting and talented people!

So when we decided to create a blog series about getting to know these talented men and women we immediately thought of Elite designer Stefani Stein. Needless to say, we’ve been a little more than curious about Stefani Stein with her eclectic, Scandinavian, West Coast style. And so when we had the chance to peep into her Saturday itinerary, chock-full of her favorite L.A. spots (Stefani resides in the burgeoning neighborhood of Venice Beach), we had a feeling we were going to discover some design destination gems—and we were right!

When she’s not designing (or sharing incredible inspo on ) this California native is hitting up some of the coolest spots that LA has to offer. Plus, we learned more about this fun, relaxed-yet-totally-refined designer as well. From Stefani's favorite weekend activities to why she’s all about the unexpected, we chat about it all.

So sit back, get to know Stefani, discover her crazy-good taste—and maybe you'll be inspired to visit LA or, better yet, start your own Decorist design project with Stefani today!

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

For me, it's important that a space tells a story. What is the mood or emotion the client wants imparted? All of my selections and specifications are focused on telling that story. Overall, I think each individual space should relate and feel cohesive when taken into account as a whole, but also be interesting enough to stand on its own.

There is a laid-back, California influence to my aesthetic. And a bit of juxtaposition—old with new, modern design with antiques, & clean-lined pieces that still exude warmth.

What’s your favorite room in your home?

Definitely my living room. It’s sunny and tranquil with a lovely view of the front garden.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style and design work absolutely influence one another.  To me, a great outfit is like a great room. There is an unexpected element and a mix of relaxed and refined. Wearing head-to-toe Chanel isn’t as interesting to me as an outfit that is less straightforward and more unexpected.  Today, for example, I’m wearing a Reformation blouse and H&M denim, paired with Christian Dior kitten heels, a vintage brass cuff and a Proenza Schouler bag.  Equally important is comfort—being uncomfortable makes me quite grumpy, so my closet has no shortage of kitten heels, flats, backless loafers and sandals.

Who is your favorite design icon?

This is a tough one! There are so many incredibly talented designers, past and present. Syrie Maugham, Adolf Loos, Carlo Scarpa and Billy Baldwin have always been great sources of inspiration. Presently, I pretty much adore everything done by Daniel Romualdez, Ilse Crawford, Luis Laplace and India Mahdavi.

What is inspiring you right now?

Ernst Caramelle, Alex Prager, Lewis Del Mar, Rouse Phillips textiles, Gucci’s Fall 2017 collection and Agnona’s Pre-Fall 2017 collection, dark marigold yellow, dusty lilac, cane webbing, rattan, burl wood and chunky terrazzo.

What’s your favorite part of living in L.A.?

Warm weather, ocean breezes, dining al fresco, great friends and interesting, emerging artists.

How do you spend your Saturday in L.A.?

10 a.m. My typical Saturday starts with sleeping in! At 10 a.m., I walk to Erewhon for an iced matcha latte with freshly made coconut milk.

11 a.m. I go for yoga at the Power Yoga East class with Anaswara in Santa Monica.

1:00 p.m. Lunch at Gjusta—the Lox Hash and Mushroom Bowl are my favorites. I’m also not the kind of person to skip dessert and Gjusta’s Panna Cotta can’t be beat.

3:00 p.m. Furniture and antique shopping at my favorite design stores, and . The latter is a great place to find vintage seascapes, interesting obelisks and studio pottery.

4:00 p.m. Shopping at Satine on 1508 Abbot Kinney. Their buyer has a great eye.

5:00 p.m. My husband and I usually take our dogs, Charli Fox and Archer, for an afternoon walk. We live on one of Venice’s walk streets, which is the best for a neighborhood stroll. Charli Fox is a stop and smell the roses kind of girl and Archer thinks every other dog he passes is infringing on his territory. His ferociousness is laughable at 11 pounds.

5:30 p.m. Happy hour at the . The Black Sails and First Blood cocktails are my favorite.

6:30 p.m. Pop into the many galleries at .

8:00 p.m. Dinner at on Abbot Kinney.

9:30 p.m. The Venice house party scene is always great. The best places to socialize in L.A. are definitely people’s homes! And anything walkable beats sitting in crosstown traffic.
