So you’ve found your dream apartment, managed to outbid other candidates, wooed the landlord with your charms, and signed on the dotted line. What’s next? Checking off our apartment checklist, of course! There are a few items that nearly every apartment needs. Take inventory of what you already own, identify what’s outstanding on our apartment checklist, and get to work on shopping for everything that will make your dream home complete.

To make it easy for you, we’ve broken down our apartment checklist room by room. Don’t panic: many of these can be affordably purchased at budget-friendly retailers, flea markets, and second-hand stores. And if you need help choosing decor and furniture for your new apartment, Decorist’s designers are ready and waiting.

The New Apartment Checklist

The Entryway

Old Brand New

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP: If your entryway is little more than a hallway, you can skip the console table—a simple shelf or even a hook to hang your keys will do.

  • Welcome mat

  • Console table (or dresser, sideboard, or shelf, space permitting)

  • Table lamp (or two)

  • Small dish or tray for keys

  • Coat rack or hook (if you don’t have a coat closet)

  • Chair or bench

  • Runner

  • Mirror

  • Overhead statement lighting

The Living Room

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP: Get creative with your furniture layout. If space allows, try two sofas facing each other, or put two armchairs facing a sofa for a more conversational atmosphere.

  • Sofa

  • Armchair (or two)

  • Coffee table

  • Side table (or three)

  • Table/floor lamps

  • Overhead lighting (chandelier or pendant)

  • Window treatments

  • Rug (or two, for layering)

  • Television

  • Media console

  • Decorative pillows

  • Throw blanket

  • Artwork

  • Coffee table books

  • Tray, candles, and other styling accessories

The Dining Room or Area

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP:  Keep a vase, a few candlesticks, or a bowl of fruit on your dining table when not in use so it feels styled.

  • Bistro table or dining table

  • Chairs (two to six)

  • Sideboard or buffet

  • Placemats or tablecloth

  • Napkins

  • Candlesticks or candelabra and candles

  • Vase

The Bathroom

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP: An extra bath mat is nice to have on laundry day. And better yet, if you buy a teak bath mat, you won’t have to wash it.

  • Shower curtain and rings

  • Bath mat

  • Trash can

  • Towels (washcloth, bath and hand towels)

  • Artwork

  • Small cabinet or casegood

  • Towel hooks and/or rack

  • Toilet plunger

  • Tissue box

The Bedroom

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP:  Plug-in or hardwired sconces make a chic alternative to bedside table lamps in a bedroom.

  • Bed frame

  • Mattress, and box spring, if needed

  • Mattress pad

  • Standard pillows and shams

  • Decorative pillows

  • Fitted and flat sheet set

  • Duvet and comforter, or blanket/quilt

  • Nightstand (or two)

  • Bedside table lamp (or two)

  • Window treatments

  • Rug

  • Dresser

  • Armchair, space permitted

  • Foot-of-the-bed bench, space permitted

  • Desk and desk chair, if desired

  • Alarm clock

  • Wastebasket

  • Overhead lighting (chandelier or pendant)

  • Hamper

The Kitchen

APARTMENT CHECKLIST TIP:  Buying all your kitchen gadgets at once can become costly! If you’re not already equipped, get the bare minimum, and accumulate new items over time.

  • Flatware

  • Flatware organizer

  • Dinnerware

  • Serveware

  • Glassware

  • Pots and pans

  • Trashcan

  • Spice rack

  • Cooking utensils

  • Jars and canisters for dry goods

  • Dish drying rack

  • Tea towels

  • Mixing bowls

  • Tupperware

  • Shelf liner

  • Cutting boards

  • Knife block and knives

  • Small appliances

  • Assorted kitchen gadgets

  • Kitchen mat or small runner
