Behind The Design: A Rental Studio With Big Style

POSTED BY DECORIST EDITORIAL TEAM
NOVEMBER 28, 2016

The Project: An empty studio apartment in need of a big dose of style

The Client: A young and hip newly-single guy looking to transform a rental into home

The Designer: Caitlin McBride, Decorist Classic designer

The Budget: $3,000

"I can't say enough about my absolutely awesome experience! Caitlin took the time to truly understand my style and what I was looking for in my 'man cave'... A+ all around!"

CLIENT'S REQUESTS

  • I like a mix of mid-century modern and contemporary items, and I love elements from comic books, street art, graffiti and Asian art
  • Is it possible to get a dining area, seating area and bedroom area in this 450-square-foot space?
  • Please work in my Eames lounge chair and ottoman - it's going to be a bit of a tight fit but I love this chair
  • Big fan of masculine colors, earth tones, natural materials, wood, leather

CAITLIN'S DESIGN DIARY

  • A living, dining and sleeping area are a lot to fit into the space but this layout makes it work - while your initial approach might be to keep the whole space as open as possible, using the sofa to separate the areas actually helps to make this feel bigger and gives the sleeping alcove some privacy
  • The acrylic coffee table, pedestal cafe dining table and wire dining chairs are low-profile and work well since they don't take up visual space
  • The accent wall in the sleeping alcove helps to define the space and is a great balance to the lighter colors in the rest of the space (and one wall is easy to paint back white the next time he moves)

PLUS, ONE FINAL CHANGE

One of the best aspects of the design experience is the collaboration and interaction between the client and the designer, and how that sometimes sparks ideas from clients that they might not have thought of initially. Such was the final last-minute change to this room design - while our client liked the black and white art (a nod to graffiti and street art), he found 3 skateboard decks he had forgotten about and wondered if they could be used as artwork instead. It was a great unique personal touch and a quick swap-out before we delivered the designs for a space that we hope will see many happy times ahead.
