Behind The Design: A Sophisticated Living and Dining Bachelor Pad

JUNE 3, 2016

The Project: A sophisticated combined living-dining room for a newly-acquired bachelor pad

The Designer: Joanna Staniszewski, Classic Designer

The Client: A 27-year-old bachelor with a new home (and nothing to put in it)

Client’s Style: Modern-Eclectic

Budget: $10,000

Client’s Requests:

  • All new furniture – moving into a new home and starting from scratch
  • Paint color recommendations to lighten up the room (anything other than the brown the room was currently painted with)
  • Great space for entertaining family and friends

We created 3D renderings of the new design in his room so that he could see exactly what his room would look like before he bought any furniture or accessories - the photorealistic images on this page are 3D renderings and not photos, which our client thought was pretty cool (we're inclined to agree)

Design Diary:

  • Our client didn’t have a clear sense of what his style was, but his designer Joanna showed him several rooms to get started and helped him identify styles he liked; as it turns out, his style is Modern-Eclectic
  • Joanna presented him with 2 different concepts, both designed for easy entertaining:
    • Natural California, a neutral palette with warm wood tones, earthy textures and a pop of blue, for a polished bohemian look
    • Sophisticated Rustic Glam, a moody, cozy and masculine design with hints of rock and roll style from leather and brass accents
  • Our client selected Natural California - he loved the unexpected choice of the blue sofa - and then worked with Joanna to mix in a few items he had found on his own
  • After seeing the range of paint colors Joanna presented, they landed on Benjamin Moore’s Super White to keep the room looking fresh, especially with all the natural light

Design Concepts for Modern-Eclectic Living and Dining Room

“I wanted to give him a design that was stylish and modern but super livable and welcoming”

Designer Joanna’s Top Design Tips:

  • While your initial approach might be to use all the same wood, a mix of rich and warm wood tones throughout helps tie the look together without being too matchy
  • Modern, interesting light fixtures, like the gorgeous midcentury lamp from Design Within Reach and the overhead satellite pendent lamp, give off a warm glow and allow layers of light throughout the room
  • I stayed within budget by integrating more affordable items, like the Nate Berkus graphic accent pillow and the tribal-inspired wall mirror, in with the higher-priced pieces without losing any sophistication.
