Chic, minimal and mid-century design are a few things that come to mind when you think of California living. And if anyone knows how to encompass these timeless decor vibes, it's Decorist Elite Designer Lori Henle. Since she's as obsessed with airy, summer serene-like spaces as we are, we asked Lori to share 5 tips to creating a lovely relaxed and approachable feel—affordably! Check these out, and get an easy, casual California bungalow look for less.

1. Clutter Out, Fresh Air In

The first step to open and airy, is simply decluttering! Say goodbye to too many knick-knack table-toppers… for that summer-fresh feel, minimal accessories and wall decor is key.

2. Clean Color Scheme

Along with minimal accessories, don’t over do the color pops in your space. Select 1-2 accent colors, like tangerine orange and turquoise in the room above, but beyond that, think neutrals and natural textures like. In this project we did Ben Moore White Dove Wall color on all of the walls to give a clean base and monochromatic look, and then layered color on top.

3. Bold Textured Accessories

As you want to minimize accessories, chose those with bold texture and rustic color for mixing and matching that combines for a rich and expansive feel. In this space, we used wood, brass, chrome, glass, and bold patterned pillows.

4. Glass Tabletop

This is a personal favorite of mine so I must emphasize! Glass tabletops instantly make a room feel more spacious. There are a lot of options out there, for even little side tables. Either way, it’s subtle touch of glam that fit’s in so nicely with more rustic/ relaxed spaces.

5. Large Mirrors

Another favorite with the same idea. Mirrors equal spacious, and fast. They add interest by playing with levels, drawing the eyes up and reflecting all the gorgeous elements of your space around the room and back again. You can’t go wrong! I love the circle mirror in this bungalow. It’s a soft touch that balances some of the rougher elements of the space and ties the natural texture in with the more modern pieces.
