If you’ve decided that you’re going to add on to your home, you’re about to embark on an exciting project. Sure, there will be challenges (as there always are in these situations) but the best way to handle those challenges is to have a solid plan in place so that you’re ready to take on whatever comes your way as you work towards completion. Your home add-on design questions are most likely at the forefront of your mind. Decorist is here to help you put those home addition plans in action. We’ll start with a few common questions we’ve heard several times from customers we’ve helped in the past.
1. Attached Addition?
One of the first and most obvious questions with regards to putting together a home add-on design is where that add-on is going to live. Are you going to simply add to your existing structure and finish with a larger building? If so, you should consider how that attached add-on is going to work with your existing decor and of course. Home add-on plans like this one may seem quite simple compared to other options, but they can also be complicated without some help and input from experienced professionals.
2. Separate Addition?
If you’re working on home add-on plans and you’re thinking it may be a good idea to just put a separate building on your property, you should consider some other variables as well. Is this separate building going to be used as a home office? As a guest suite? If you’re going to be using any additional space on a daily basis, you may not want to have to walk outside to enjoy that space, particularly if you live in a colder climate.
3. What About the Garage?
Many a home add-on design will involve expanding the garage upward and building a livable suite above it. These can be done beautifully and with minimal intrusion into your home while it’s being built, but you’ll also need to consider all that you may need to include in such an addition such as plumbing, temperature control and other necessities if guests are going to be staying in there. You may also need to consider whether or not you’ll have to tear down your garage altogether so everything can be built properly.
